What is it? Myelogram is used to evaluate the condition of the spinal cord and the nerve roots related. The spinal cord is surrounded and protected by a liquid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), contained in the spinal sac.
You will be asked to lie in a prone position (on your stomach); your physician will perform a local anesthetic on the location of the injection. A contrast liquid is injected in the cerebrospinal fluid. The movement of the contrast liquid is monitored by your doctor through normal X-ray. Any abnormality of the spinal sac will indicate a pressure on the spinal cord due to different conditions (i.e. degenerate disc).
How can I prepare for myelogram? Myelogram is generally considered a safe procedure, although you may experience some discomfort. You have to tell your physician if you may be pregnant and whether you are aware of any allergies.
