Between each vertebra there is an intervertebral disc that acts as a shock absorber between the vertebrae. The discs are composed of a strong outer ring (mostly composed of ligament tissues) and a softer jelly-like center mostly made of water and soft tissues. The nucleus of the disc acts as a sponge, absorbing the pressure put on the spine. The outer part of the disc, called the annulus keeps the nucleus inside of the disc despite the pressure. |
