Laminectomy

Laminectomy is a surgical treatment that aims to relieve the pain caused by pressure on nerves (decompression).

As the name suggests, laminectomy involves the partial removal of the lamina. Most commonly, this surgery is performed in the lumbar part of the spine.

Surgical procedure: the steps.

  1. Your surgeon will perform an incision in your back, over the area that needs to be operated. The muscles that surround the spine are moved aside, to allow a clear view of the surgical site.
  2. Once your surgeon approaches the spine, a small window will be cut through the lamina. This allows the surgeon to relieve the pressure on the nerve roots and relieve your pain.
